How do you protect yourself when buying privately?

June 12, 2015

PPSRLogoAstute Ability Group offer both secured and unsecured loans for major purchases.  While an unsecured loan means you don't have to provide all the details of the car/horse float/boat/caravan etc you are buying to the finance company (as the money goes into your account instead of the sellers), we always suggest running a check on the asset called a PPSR.

The PPSR is the Personal Property Security Register and it holds information on all sorts of assets.  You can find out if there is any money owing, if it has ever been written off, or ever reported stolen.

If Astute are organising you an unsecured personal loan for a major purchase, we are happy to order a PPSR report for you as part of our service.  This protects you from inadvertently buying something that may not actually belong to the seller, or has been stolen, a repaired write off or currently under finance. While most people selling their gear on the private market are legitimate, there is always going to be the odd bad apple.  We would hate for you to end up with a loan for something you can't legally own!
