An update to our previous blog

July 2, 2015

We have had a great reaction to our previous post regarding Astute's involvement with a local high school to teach their economics students a bit about life in the real world.  It was reported in the finance industry publication brokernews.com.au.

If you missed the article you can read it here: Article regarding Astute's involvement at local high school

Funnily enough, today we came across an article about a New Zealand teenager who made her feelings on the subject very clear, by giving a speech regarding what she considers important to learn at high school.  Here's an excerpt:

"Do I honestly need to know what a=1+rn to the 2nd power is... in order to get somewhere in life? Do I honestly need to know the structure of a seed and how it works and whatnot?  No, I don't think so," Miss Pritchard thundered.

"In high school we should be learning about the real world - how to pay my taxes, apply for jobs, mortgage my house, buy a car - things that we will actually use in the future."*

It's interesting to know that internationally, awareness is growing of the importance in teach students "life skills" just as much as the traditional subjects.

Till next time,

Sue and the team at Astute
